On Sunday 31st October 2010, the artist circumnavigated Drakeʼs Island by boat and measured its perimeter using a giant ball of string.

Like an enormous lasso, the string briefly captured and contained the island.

To coincide with The Sutton Youth Initiative at The Gallery, Plymouth College of Art, Project Space 11 is pleased to present Perimeter by Jonty Lees.

Leesʼ work is in response to the narrative of The Sutton Youth Initiative at The Gallery, PCA.

In 2001, six friends attempted to capture Drakeʼs Island. The events that occurred on this coming of age journey have stayed with the group.
The Sutton Youth Initiative presents work by five young artists (also the Directors of Project Space 11), bound together by a formative journey. Through their diverse practices, the group has explored a range of responses to this significant collective experience.
Over time, the shared event has consciously and subconsciously influenced each artists practice; the shadow of the event becoming mythologized by itʼs repeated referencing in both their individual and collaborative work.
Word of mouth, rumour and visual re-imaginings, not only demonstrate the malleability of oral and visual history, but also emphasise the concept of myth surrounding The Sutton Youth Initiative.

Jonty Lees is based in Cornwall and has had recent solo exhibitions at Tate St Ives (2007) and Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange, Penzance (2010). Recent group exhibitions include Nought to Sixty, ICA, London (2008) and Cabaret Futura, Cell Project Space, London (2008). A forthcoming solo exhibition by the artist will take place at Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea, (2012).
