Project Space 11 presents: artists in residence
Monday 28th February – Friday 25th March 2011

Photos/Works

Project Space 11 has invited four artists to undertake week-long residencies between Monday 28th February – Friday 25th March 2011.

Each of the four artists has a relationship or dialogue with the city, be that familial or creative. Each connection is a unique and personal association with Plymouth, and the relationships explored may not necessarily be comfortable. Ranging from professional dealings – an artist who has a track record of delivering projects in the region, to the more ambiguous nature of ‘home’ – such as an individual who has roots in Plymouth and left with no intention of coming back, or an artist who may reside here but rarely exhibits in city.

Each artist will use the space for one week. The space may be used as a working studio, a hub for a project or act as an interface between the artist’s practice and the public.

At the end of each week, all traces of the artist and the relationship they have developed will be removed, ready for the next inhabitant to start over.

Each residency will be an exploration of the artists’ relationships with Plymouth and perhaps the market itself. The residencies could be thought of as mini-experiments investigating what it means to work openly in the public realm and exposing the artist’s methods and practice to the market community.

Week 1 (Monday 28th February – Saturday 5th March): Josh Greet

Taking inspiration from youth culture, fantasy and adventure, Josh Greet’s photographic practice provokes a compelling sense of escapism. He looks to performance, installation, moving image and 3D imagery to create work reminiscent of Ryan McGinley and Benjamin Alexander Huseby. Josh uses a hands on, self-sufficient approach to image-making; by collaborating with friends and peers, his work is imbued with a quiet camaraderie. Josh is from Plymouth, and is currently studying FD Photography at Plymouth College of Art.

Week 2 (Monday 7th March – Saturday 12th March): Steven Paige

Steven Paige’s work encompasses performance, sculpture, video, publications, public events, permanent and temporal projects. Practice-led research inhabits a conceptual framework visually exploring societal notions of freedom, expression and instruction.

Popular Pursuits: An idle mind is the devil’s workshop

Taking the phase ‘An idle mind…’ first quoted in H.G. Bohn’s “Hand-Book of Proverbs”, published in 1855 to task, Steven will use the allocated time in Project Space 11 to acquire new skills through exercise and instruction. From rope knotting to slogan writing, to playing poker and making paper airplanes, learned through practice and rote, each day a series of tasks will be set, with visitors welcome to participate, proffer their knowledge and join in the betterment of the artist, were he can succeed or fail.  The space will capture the evidence of the endeavours: part archive and part trophies of the accomplished tasks.

Steven was born in Plymouth, and while he has lived internationally, the city has drawn him back repeatedly, delivering projects such as Proximity Effect and Control Point at Plymouth Arts Centre.

Recent residencies include Cura Bodrum Residency, Turkey and Braziers International Artists Workshop in the UK. Recent exhibitions include work in 17 at SHIFT Gallery, London, Artist Wakes in Bury Museum and even my mum can make a book at Manzara Perspectives, Istanbul.

Week 3 (Monday 14th March – Saturday 19th March): Christopher Green

Swings and RoundaboutsFish & The Fruits Paintings (To the people of Plymouth City Market) 2011

Prior to his residency at Project Space 11 Christopher Green will be inviting residents of Plymouth through the distribution of forms and emails to describe a single colour. During the course of the residency the artist will then mix his own interpretations of the described colours and translate them into PS11, painting directly onto the walls.

An exercise in translation and the exchange and changeability of perception and abstracted ideas, the work will only take a physical presence for a very short amount of time upon it’s completion at the end of the residency. Once all of the colours have been applied they will assume absolute anonymity, existing as autonomous citations coming together in a moment of realisation before slipping back into the mind of the viewer never to be seen again.

A post-box made by the artist will be installed outside the project space in the weeks leading up to the residency for the convenient deposition of forms and to place an emphasis on the participation of both market traders and shoppers. To contribute to this project please email e-leven@live.co.uk

A list of the contributors’ names will form a publication to accompany the work.

Christopher moved to Plymouth in 2010 and his studio practice is based here. He is represented by Hannah Barry Gallery, London and has exhibited internationally with the gallery, including the ‘Peckham Pavilion’ at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009. He was also a founding member in the Lyndhurst Way gallery, South London. This is the first time he has shown his work in the city.

Week 4 (Monday 21st March – Saturday 26th March): Rhys Coren

Rhys Coren grew up in Plymouth, England in the 80s and 90s.  Working across a broad range of media, his practice deals directly with popular culture, fashions, trends and the shared cultural experience that formed social ritual during this period.  Rhys is interested in patterns in human behavior, cultural comparison, and the aesthetics that arise from marrying both analogue and digital processes.

Rhys lives and works in London and has exhibited widely nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include: Duck Hunt, Rhubaba, Edinburgh, UK; Something is Coming, Godspeeeeed Gallery, Richmond, VA, USA; Techno-Thriller, The Newbridge Project, Newcastle, UK; VIDEO PROGETTO, 26CC, Rome, Italy; Paintings from England and America, Hilary Crisp, London, UK; NEVERandagain, ISCP, New York City, NY, USA; commissioned online artworks for both I-D online and The Two Jonny’s Gallery, London; and the short story Granddad Swears published in Blown Magazine # 2.
